Meet the Expert – Nathan Mumford

12 October, 21 / Meet the Expert, Nevada, Sunland Asphalt

What is your title and division?

Project Consultant, Nevada Division

Explain your background and experience in the construction industry. (Ex. What company did you come from? What positions have you previously held? Etc.)

I was an Account Executive with Ace Asphalt for 3 ½ years prior to the merger with Sunland.  Before switching to the vendor side in 2016, I spent a decade in the multi-family industry across a wide variety of roles, beginning as a leasing consultant in Orange County, CA and working my way up!

Describe your position with Sunland.  What does a typical day look like for you?

The Project Consultant position is essentially a consultant and a facilitator between the clients out there in the marketplace, including the ones we are not yet working with or bidding to, and our estimating and operations teams.  It is a fast moving process of phone calls, text messages, e-mails, job walks, meetings, industry events, completing field sheets and project maps with clear scopes of work, and ultimately getting contracts signed and performing great projects!

What was your favorite subject in school?

Philosophy!!  I went to Chapman University in Orange, CA and they had a wonderful philosophy department run by Dr. Chuck Hughes that fostered a lifelong interest in the subject.

What famous person would you like to meet?

Currently Alive – Sam Harris

All of History – Ayn Rand

What do you do for fun?

We have a 4-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter, and pre-pandemic our favorite thing to do for fun was going to Disneyland in Anaheim.  Also in between hanging out with the family and working, I have about 20 podcasts that I subscribe to, which is great because they can be listened to while multi-tasking.  When you have two small kids there isn’t any extra time in the day!!  My favorite podcasts are Making Sense with Sam Harris and Jocko Podcast.

Where is your favorite vacation destination?

My wife and I are huge Disney parks nerds as alluded to above, which has been a very unfortunate avocation during the pandemic.  Our favorite place to go on vacation is Disneyworld in Orlando!
